From fairy-hunting to cryptid tracking, this is where adventure begins
You don’t need a plane ticket or a packed itinerary to spark wonder. Sometimes, all it takes is a patch of backyard, a muddy footprint, and a half-believed legend whispered into the wind.
At Camp Moss and Moon, we believe the wild begins the moment your kids step outside. And if you’re lucky—they might just invite you along.
This week, we’re handing you 10 backyard quests that require no screens, minimal prep, and just the right amount of imagination.
✨ Bonus: Grab your free printable Quest Card deck at the end of this post to start the magic right away.
The Quests
1. Cryptid Tracking
Search for signs of mythical creatures in your yard or local trail. Bent twigs? Suspicious footprints? Definitely Mothman.
2. Fairy Ring Discovery
Hunt for mushrooms, flower circles, or mossy clearings—and leave tiny offerings in acorn caps.
3. The Invisible Map
Let your child draw a “map” of the backyard, adding landmarks only they can see. The birch tree becomes a dragon den. The hose? A secret snake tunnel.
4. Shadow Sneaker
Chase shadows at sunset. Tag them. Record their shapes. Were any of them… not yours?
5. Mud Spellcasting
Mix ingredients like soil, dandelion fluff, and water into potions. Each gets a purpose: “Summon Kindness” or “Make Brothers Disappear (Temporarily).”
6. Cloud Beasts
Lie on your backs. Watch the clouds. Give each beast a name, a power, and a tragic backstory.
7. Nature Relic Hunt
Make a list of “relics” (a striped rock, a feather, a leaf that feels like velvet). Whoever returns with the most wins the title of Questkeeper.
8. The Howling Hour
Wait for twilight. Then, with absolutely no warning… howl. Just to see if anyone (or anything) answers.
9. Stick Sword Tournament
Find your weapon in the wild (a stick, naturally), and duel for honor. Bonus points for ridiculous knight names.
10. Campfire Legends
Tell stories around a backyard fire pit (or battery candle if needed). Let each person add a sentence. Make it weird. Make it epic.
Why Backyard Quests Matter
They’re simple. They’re screen-free. And they remind us that adventure doesn’t have to be far-flung or fancy. For kids, it’s never about the size of the backyard—it’s about the size of the belief.
These quests aren’t just games. They’re invitations back to wonder.
And sometimes… the parents need that most of all.

Best Printing Practices
To keep your cards sturdy and adventure-ready:
- Print on cardstock (recommended: 80–110 lb weight).
Regular paper works in a pinch but may be too flimsy for repeated outdoor quests. - Use “Actual Size” or 100% scale in your print settings.
Avoid “Fit to Page,” which may shrink the cards. - Cut along the edges using scissors or a paper trimmer.
Each sheet contains 3 or 4 cards. Just follow the spacing between each badge-style design. - Laminate for durability if you’ll be using them outside often or with multiple kids.
(You can also store them in a small recipe box or punch a corner hole and clip them onto a ring!)
Now go forth, brave explorer — your backyard is calling.
